NAMPA, Idaho – Juniors
Anthony Magallon and
Paul May and freshman Abraham Chirchir were crowned championships in the high jump, shot put and the 3,000-meter run leading The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's and women's track & field teams on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Ford Idaho Center.
Magallon won the men's high jump after clearing a height of 2.06 meters, which ranks third highest mark in program history.
May won the men's shot put after a throw of 16.58 meters and was just one of two throwers to surpass the 16-meter mark. Senior
Antonio Salinas added a third-place finish in the men's shot put after a throw of 15.70 meters and sophomore Michael Gonzalez finished in sixth place with a throw of 14.59 meters.
Chirchir won the men's 3,000-meter run after crossing the finish line with a time of 8:28.40, which was almost four seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Chirchir went on to be named the men's Freshman of the Year after also winning the 5,000-meter run on Friday.
UTRGV combined for five second place finishes to close out the championships. Junior
Dai'ja Coleman got the day started with a second-place finish in the women's triple jump after a new personal best leap of 12.10 meters, which ranks third best in program history.

Yariel Matute posted a second-place finish in the men's 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 48.40 seconds. Sophomore Carlos Serna-Hernandez added a fifth-place finish with a time of 49.42 seconds.
Junior
Idatonye Cheetham-West added a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash after breaking her own program record with a time of 24.53 seconds. She also finished in third place in the 60-meter dash after breaking another one of her program records with a time of 7.54 seconds.
Cheetham-West went on to earn the women's High Point Award after earning a total of 24 points. She earned 10 points for her win in the long jump yesterday, eight points for her second-place finish in the 200-meter dash and six points for third place in the 60-meter dash.
Senior
JoVanna Jones also had a strong showing in both of those events posting a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash after posting times of 24.08 seconds and 7.72 seconds, respectively.
Sophomore Ricardo Mendoza added a second-place finish in the men's 800-meter run after posting a time of 1:53.86. Freshman Mikel Escobar came in fifth with a time of 1:56.41.
UTRGV closed out the day with a second-place finish in the women's 4x400-meter dash after the team of Jones and juniors
Felicia Wills, Destiney Rutherford and
Valerie King Mancha set a program record with a time of 3:50.43.
As a team, the men finished in fourth place with 109 points while the women's team finished in fifth with 61. Both point totals are the highest for the program since joining the WAC.
UTRGV will now turn its attention to the outdoor portion of its schedule and will be back in action at the UTSA Invitational from March 16-18.
