First Day Results
SAN ANTONIO – Junior
Paul May reset his own program record in the shot put after a throw of 17.51 meters on Friday to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's and women's track and field teams on the first day of the UIW Invitational at Tom Benson Track Stadium.
May's throw surpassed his previous record of 17.21 meters that was set last month at the Bobcat Invitational. May used his record setting throw to finish in third place out of 22 total throwers.
UTRGV added two more in the top-10 as senior
Antonio Salinas posted a sixth-place finish after a throw of 16.16 meters and then it was sophomore Christian Hall-Garner who finished in eighth place with a throw of 15.82 meters.
Hall-Garner followed with a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw after a mark of 52.16 meters.
May wasn't the only one to post a third-place finish on the day as sophomore Ricardo Mendoza finished in third place in the 1,500-meter run after crossing the finish line with a time of 3:56.13.
On the women's side, sophomore Ana Bautista posted a 10
th place finish after posting a time of 4:50.34 in the 1,500-meter run.
Senior
Ashley Pierce also posted a 10
th place finish in the hammer throw after posting a mark of 47.50 meters.
UTRGV will wrap up the UIW Invitational on Saturday with competition starting at 9 a.m.
