HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field teams wrapped up the regular season by setting 17 new personal records at the Tom Tellez Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston, on Friday at Tom Tellez Track.
Freshman
Abraham Chirchir won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 9:27.03, the fourth-best mark in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) this season. Junior Sharyland alum
Brian Yanez (9:49.18) and freshman
Gabriel Kiprono (9:54.61) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with personal records as well.
Sophomore
Ashley Pierce finished third in the hammer throw with new personal record of 50.69 meters, the third best mark in the WAC this season.
UTRGV placed three student-athletes in the top 10 in the shot put, with junior
Paul May placing third with a throw of 17.18 meters, senior Mission alum
Antonio Salinas coming in eighth with a throw of 15.50 meters, and sophomore Alamo alum
Michael Gonzalez recording a personal record throw of 15.30 meters.
Senior
Jovanna Jones came in fifth in the 100-meter dash with a personal record time of 12.03.
Sophomore Edinburg North alum
Bryana Rios finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a personal record time of 4:49.92.
A trio of runners set new personal records in the 800-meter run, including sophomore Brownsville Veterans alum
Haley Allen (2:19.38), sophomore Rio Grande City alum
Ana Bautista (2:22.03), and sophomore Valley View alum
Monica Yanez (2:26.23).
Two student-athletes set new personal records in the 110-meter hurdles, including freshman Weslaco alum
Alex Lara (15.50) and junior
Dimitris Levantinos (16.36), and in the 100-meter dash, including freshman
Ronnie Ollivierre (11.00) and senior Edinburg North alum
Cristian Reyna (11.61).
Junior
Destiny Rutherford finished second in the 200-meter dash with a personal record time of 25.46.
Freshman Juarez Lincoln alum
Jose Serna competed in the 1,500-meter run for the first time, finishing eighth with a time of 4:10.91.
