RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams opened up the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships with a pair of silver and a pair of bronze medals on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
In the men's hammer throw, graduate student
Paul May and senior
Christian Hall-Gardner placed second and third, respectively, with launches of 57.19 meters, tied for fifth-best in program history, and 53.84 meters, earning a combined 14 points.
Sophomore
Esmeralda Ruiz took silver in the women's hammer throw with a personal record throw of 55.73 meters, the fourth-best mark in program history, earning eight points.
In the men's 10,000-meter run, senior
Abraham Chirchir took bronze with a time of 30:47.51.
In the decathlon, graduate student Palmview alum
Anthony Magallon won the high jump by clearing 1.92 meters while taking second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.93.
Freshman Mission Veterans alum
Alex Galvan won the decathlon shot put with a toss of 12.83 meters.
Sophomore
Uxia Pereria finished with a second-place time of 14.46 in the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles, tied for the ninth-best in program history.
The UTRGV men's team currently sits third in the WAC with 28 points. Grand Canyon leads the way with 68. The UTRGV women's team is in fourth with 11 points. Grand Canyon leads with 38 points.
Action resumes on Friday with combined events at 9:30 a.m., field events at 12 p.m. and track events at 5. Due to a combination of limited space and COVID-19 protocols as voted upon by the WAC Medical Advisory Committee, fans will be unable to attend the events in person. Fans can watch field events through the
WAC Facebook Page and track events on
ESPN+ in the United States and the
WAC Digital Network internationally.
