Ramirez Makes Opening Day Roster for Águilas de Mexicali

MEXICALI, B.C., Mexico – Infielder Diego Ramirez, who played with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team from 2021-22, made the opening day roster after competing in training camp with the Águilas de Mexicali of the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico.
 
The Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico (LMP), also known as the Mexican Pacific League, is a professional baseball winter league with 10 teams. The season starts tonight with Mexicali visiting Monterrey at 7:30 p.m. The season runs through December with playoffs in January. The league champion competes in the Caribbean Series.
 
The Águilas de Mexicali have four league championships, with the last one coming in 2017.
 
In two seasons with the Vaqueros, Ramirez hit .256/.336/.323 with two home runs, nine doubles, three triples, 40 RBI, and 57 runs scored in 88 games (86 starts) at second base, third base and shortstop.
 
After starring at Howard College for two seasons, Ramirez came to UTRGV in 2021 and hit .327/.407/.388 in 31 games (30 starts) as the starting second baseman.
 
Ramirez came back in 2022 to post 11 multi-hit games over the final two months of the season, during which time he hit .258 with 17 RBI and 22 runs scored.
 
Ramirez is one of seven alumni known to be playing professional baseball along with Dusten Knight (2012-13), who saw time in the majors with the Tampa Bay Rays while spending most of the season with the Durham Bulls (Triple-A) from whom he closed out the Triple-A Championship Game, Andy Atwood (2019-21), who finished the season with the Winston-Salem Dash (High-A, Chicago White Sox), Christian Sepulveda (2019-21), who finished the season with the Tri-City Dust Devils (High-A, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Kevin Stevens (2020-22), who finished the season with the Tampa Tarpon (Single-A, New York Yankees), Conrado Diaz (2019-21), who played for Algodoneros de Unión Laguna of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, and Rogelio Bernal (2011-12), who played with the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the Atlantic League.
