SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's women's tennis team combined for 11 singles and doubles victories during Day 1 of the Texas State Invitational at the Bobcat Tennis Center on Saturday. 
 
The Vaqueros played two rounds of singles matches to start the day and captured eight victories. Sophomore Marjorie Souza and junior Lea Karren were the top performers, each winning both of their singles matches. Souza defeated Texas State's Mae McCutcheon 6-3, 6-1 in the second flight and Karren came from behind to best Texas State's Kate Malazonia 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 in the third flight of Round 1. 
 
Senior Kristyna Mamicova defeated Texas State's Maria Lora 7-5, 7-6 in the seventh flight in the first round of singles bouts. Freshman Brownsville Hanna alum Sofia De Leon picked up the first singles victory of her UTRGV career by defeating Emma Carr from Texas State 6-2, 6-3 in the 11^th flight of Round 1. 
 
Junior Isabelle Bahr, Souza and Karren all earned wins at the top of the lineup in the second round of singles matches. Bahr topped Incarnate Word's (UIW) Sofia Salcedo 6-2, 4-6, 1-0, Souza beat Lyric Bonilla (unattached) 6-2, 6-3 and Karren defeated UIW's Ine Lamprecht 6-2, 6-4. 
 
Freshman Yaiza Vazquez earned her first career singles victory in Round 2, beating Texas State's Emma Carr 6-2, 6-1. 
 
Day 1 ended with doubles competitions, and UTRGV continued to impress on the doubles courts as it did last season. The Vaqueros won three of five doubles matches. 
 
Souza and sophomore Barbara Martinez, All-WAC Second Team Doubles honorees last season, defeated McNeese State's Aina Domingo/Luna Jokanovic 6-1 in the top flight. Karren and sophomore Daniela Rosenberger topped McNeese State's Ariene Sanchis/Natalia Ballo 6-4 in the second flight. Vazquez and senior Valeria Montero beat Texas State's Emma Carr/Maria Lora 6-4 in the fifth flight. 
 
The Texas State Invitational finishes Sunday at the Bobcat Tennis Center, starting with Round 3 singles matches at 9 a.m. followed by Rounds 2 and 3 of doubles.
