Men's Golf Closes Out Fall Season at Monterrey Collegiate Classic

MONTERREY, Mexico – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team closes out their fall season when they compete at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic, hosted by George Washington University, starting on Friday at Club Campestre.
 
The 54-hole event will feature a unique format with 27 holes being played on Friday and 27 holes being played on Saturday.
 
Club Campestre plays 7,141 yards and is a par 72.
 
The Competition
There will be a 10-team field that will feature UTRGV, host George Washington, Howard University, Idaho, Loyola Maryland, North Dakota State, Tarleton State, Utah State, Valparaiso, and Yale. 
 
Starting Five  
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros posted a fourth place finish at the Grier Invitational with a three-round score of 848. The Vaqueros posted all three rounds under par as they turned in rounds of 282 (-6), 281 (-7), and 285 (-3) as they finished just seven shots back of Wichita State for first place. 
 
Senior Javier Neira Garcia led the way for the Vaqueros as he finished tied for sixth with a three-round score of 207. Garcia posted all three rounds of even par of better as he carded a first round 69 (-3), 72 (E), and 66 (-6).
 
Junior Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished tied for 13th with a three-round score of 211 after posting rounds of 69 (-3), 69 (-3), and 73. Freshman Esteban Gonzalez finished tied for 21st with a three-round score of 214 after posting rounds of 71 (-1), 73, and 70 (-2). 
 
Freshman Emilio Gil Leyva finished tied for 49th with a three-round score of 220 after posting rounds of 73, 67 (-5), and 80 and freshman Eddie Lai finished tied for 74th with a three-round score of 227 with rounds of 76, 75, and 76. 
 
Entering the Record Books
UTRGV's three-round score of 848 put in an entry in the record book as it marked the fourth lowest three-round team score in program history. It's the first entry into the top-five since the spring of 2019.
 
Garcia's three-round 207 also put him into the record books as he now ranks fifth in program history for three-round individual score. It's also the first entry in the top-five since the spring of 2019.
 
Garcia's final round six-under 66 is also the fifth lowest single round individual score in program history and setting a new personal best.
