CARROLLTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team improved by five strokes from the first round to second round as they sit in seventh place after the first day of the Maridoe Collegiate on Monday at Maridoe Country Club. 
 
The Vaqueros opened with a first round 304 before posting a second round 299. UTRGV was one of five schools to improve from the first round to the second round and are just three shots out of fifth place. 
 
Freshman Jorge Martin Sampedro led the way for the Vaqueros on Monday as he sits tied for 15^th through two rounds with a total of 148. Sampedro opened with a 78 before posting a two-under par 70, which is tied for the second lowest second round score. 
 
Sophomore Gabriel Dulon Villoslada is tied for 20^th with a two-round total of 150 after opening with a first round 76 and then improving with a second round 74. Junior Rodolphe Cicala is tied for 33^rd with a two-round total of 153 after opening with an even par 72 and then posting a second round 81. 
 
Junior Esteban Gonzalez is tied for 47^th with a two-round total of 156 after opening with a first round 81 and then improving by six strokes with a second round 75. Freshman Brock Porter is tied for 56^th with a two-round total of 158 after posting rounds of 78 and 80. 
 
Oklahoma State holds the first day lead with a two-round total of 576 with rounds of 283 and 293. Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang holds the individual lead with a two-round total of 140. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Tuesday for the final round starting at 8 a.m.
