RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field/cross country program is hosting a free youth clinic on Wednesday, March 15 in Brownsville.
The clinic is open to children ranging from kindergarteners to eighth graders. It will be held at Duck Head Field near the UTRGV Brownsville campus from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own athletic shoes and attire, water and a workout towel or mat. Duck Head Field is located at 2499 E. Ringgold St.
"We really want to present the sport in the same way we all got into track & field. We want to not only show the fundamentals of our sport but introduce multiple events to the kids in a fun way," UTRGV head track & field/cross country coach
Shareese Hicks said. "We are looking forward to hosting the youth clinic at our Brownsville campus. Any chance we get to visit our beautiful campus is always a treat. Assistant coach (throws) Cleo Borel has been working very hard to ensure the event is safe, organized, fun and impactful. Join us!"
The Vaqueros are an incredibly energetic and positive team and will create a fun environment for attendees to learn. Their athleticism is undeniable, too, as the student-athletes broke three program records in the indoor season and won three medals at the competitive Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Indoor Championships.
UTRGV's track & field/cross country program features 27 student-athletes from the Rio Grande Valley, including former Cameron County standouts
Estrella Medellin and
Jorge Salazar from Brownsville Porter,
Aliyah Castillo and
Alejandro Arellano from Brownsville Hanna,
Natalie Guillen and
Penny Alanis from Los Fresnos,
Julian Trevino from La Feria,
Lauren Rekward from Harlingen South and
Desiree Guerra from Santa Rosa.
Register to attend the clinic at GoUTRGV.com/TFXCClinic.
"Track & field is extremely popular among the youth and offers valuable applications to many other sports," Hicks said. "We truly believe when it is in your power to act, you shouldn't withhold good from those who we can help. Between our knowledgeable staff and the excitement of our student-athletes volunteering, this event is bound to make a huge impact on the Rio Grande Valley."
