AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros outdoor track & field teams will be competing in one final tune-up match prior to the conference championships Friday and Saturday at the Texas Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium & Soccer Field.
Action begins Friday with field events at 11 a.m. Running events Friday will commence at 1 p.m. Most events will compete on Saturday, beginning with field events at 9:30 a.m. and running events at 2:20 p.m.
Competing teams will include the hosting Texas Longhorns, Texas State, UTSA, Houston, SMU, Florida State, Notre Dame, Rice, Incarnate Word and others. Western Athletic Conference (WAC) foes Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State and UT Arlington will also be in attendance.
"We're feeling very good. We're coming off a meet where we got two school records with majority freshmen teams, so that was a confidence boost on the sprints side. Across all event groups we've got people clawing and crawling to the top of the WAC performance lists and even the NCAA West lists so across the board we're feeling really good and ready to compete this weekend," head coach
Shareese Hicks said.
UTRGV's women's throws crew has been solid all season, and the jumpers have been dynamic. The sprint and distance groups are improving at a consistent rate and showing flashes of brilliance, all coming around to peaking at the right time.
The Vaqueros will use this final regular season meet to focus on the little things and chase fast times and big marks to put themselves in a good spot heading into championship season.
"We're seeing constant hunger and pride in being a Vaquero and representing the Valley. It's exciting for us and the entire program across the board," Hicks said. "They know this is their last stamp on that WAC top-10 list going into the conference championships, so I think we're ready to perform at our best and make everybody proud."
