UTRGV Athletics Hires Derek Schramm as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Advancement and Administration

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque announced on Monday the hiring of Derek Schramm as the senior associate athletic director for advancement and administration. Schramm, who has 13 years of experience working in college athletics, comes to UTRGV from Lamar University where he most recently served as associate athletic director of external affairs & revenue generation.

In his most recent role, Schramm led Lamar's day-to-day affairs in ticketing, marketing, corporate partnerships, fundraising, creative services, and media relations. Schramm was also the liaison for multiple third-party partners, sport administrator for men's and women's cross country and track & field and undertook name, image, and likeness efforts with the launch of the CardiNIL Exchange. Schramm helped Lamar exceed ticket sales revenue goals, including an overall ticket revenue increase of 73% from 2021 to 2022.

"Derek is a great addition to our athletics department, and we are excited to welcome him to the UTRGV family. Throughout his career, it is evident he is someone who understands hard work, has a passion for college athletics, and doesn't shy away from rolling up his sleeves to do whatever it takes to get the job done," Conque said. "As UTRGV Athletics continues to experience tremendous growth, Derek's leadership will be instrumental to ensuring ongoing external success to provide the much-needed resources to care for our student-athletes by helping us continue to #RallyTheValley."

Schramm joined Lamar in June 2019, initially working as manager of ticket sales and service for two years before being promoted to assistant athletic director for ticket sales and service.

As the manager of ticket sales and service, Schramm created and implemented brand new season ticket renewal incentive plans for football, baseball, and basketball, launched the L-Club for all former letterwinners, and created a new referral program for football, baseball, and basketball.

"I couldn't be more excited to be joining UTRGV Athletics and working alongside such an amazing team of administrators, support staff, and coaches. I want to sincerely thank Chasse for this tremendous opportunity," Schramm said. "I can't wait to hit the ground running by building relationships with Vaqueros supporters in the community and by supporting our student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence. There's never been a better time to be a Vaquero!"

Before his time at Lamar, Schramm was the manager of ticket sales and service at Miami (OH) University, helping Miami generate back-to-back years of record high ticket revenue in 2017-18 and 2018-19. He created and implemented brand new season ticket renewal incentive plans for football, hockey, and basketball. He also introduced an annual "week of sales," which saw a 335% increase from year one to year two.

Schramm also worked in the ticketing operation at Kansas in roles related to new business and development for the athletics department from March 2015 through June 2017.

Schramm spent the previous two years at Minnesota, first as a ticket sales representative and then as a senior ticket sales representative.

As a student at the University of Nebraska, Schramm worked as an athletics marketing intern from August 2011 to May 2013. Prior to this internship, Schramm volunteered as a ticket sales account executive from August 2010 to May 2011. He also gained experience as a game day marketing and promotions intern with the St. Paul Saints minor league baseball team during the summers of 2010 and 2011.

Schramm doubled-majored in marketing and management en route to earning a Bachelor of Science from Nebraska in 2013. He is currently working toward a Master of Business Administration in Leadership at Lamar.
