HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros indoor track & field teams collected 10 personal records and made seven entries into the program record books as they closed out the Robert Platt Invitational Saturday at Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Symoria Adkins added to her season success in the women's 60-meter hurdles, advancing from the semifinals and taking fourth in the finals (8.54) Saturday. Her times in both rounds were the sixth and fifth-fastest in program history, and she now owns the nine best times in the indoor record books. Adkins also matched the program's fifth-fastest performance in the semis of the 60-meter dash and took the No. 8 spot in the 200-meter dash.
UTRGV's field student-athletes turned in several big marks. In the men's long jump, sophomore
Jedidiah Udunna and junior
Kevin Washington both made their way into the program record books. Udunna was eighth with a jump of 7.23 meters, good for No. 3 in history. Washington cleared a personal record of 7.01 meters to finish 16
th and take the No. 8 spot in school history. Sophomore
Hannah Hilding secured a two-PR weekend with a good outing in the women's shot put. She finished 11
th with a mark of 13.63 meters and freshman
Omolola Kuponiyi followed in 14
th.
Freshman
James Voss tied his third-best time in the record books, 8.14, as he finished 11
th in the men's 60-meter hurdles semifinals.
In the mid-distance races, junior
Samantha Gonzalez ran a personal best in the women's mile, finishing 12
th. Freshman
Kailey Salazar lowered her best time to 2:19.04 in the women's 800-meter run as she placed 12
th, and senior Brownsville Porter alum
Jorge Salazar also took 12
th in the men's 800 with a new PR of 1:58.50.
Gonzalez notched her second PR of the day in the women's 3,000-meter run, taking ninth in 10:13.06.
Sophomores
Nayla Harris, Brownsville Hanna alum
Aliyah Castillo and
Lani Brewer all notched personal bests in the women's 200. Sophomore Los Fresnos alum
Penny Alanis tabbed a PR in the women's high jump.
The next meet for UTRGV will be the Jarvis Scott Open in Lubbock Feb. 9-10.
