ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field program collected two medals – silver from junior
Kailah Gilmore in the women's long jump and bronze from sophomore
Jedidiah Udunna in men's long jump – and five program records during Day One of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships Monday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The meet finishes Tuesday with action beginning at 9 a.m. starting with combined events followed by field and running events. The meet is being broadcast domestically on ESPN+ and internationally on WACInternational.tv.
The women's long jumpers got UTRGV on the board in a big way, with all four advancing to finals and combining to score 14 points. Gilmore led the pack and claimed silver, jumping 5.98 meters – a personal best and good for No. 5 in program history. Junior
Gabrielle Thomas and sophomore
Nayla Harris followed in sixth and seventh, respectively, both notching PRs with marks of 5.78 meters. Sophomore
Rayja'nae Pettit cleared 5.76 meters to finish eighth.
Sophomore
Hannah Hilding added to the women's score with a fifth-place finish in weight throw. She launched a massive personal best of 17.28 meters to put four points on the board.
Udunna and junior
Kevin Washington got UTRGV's men's team on the board with solid performances in long jump. Udunna took bronze, jumping 7.40 meters to tie his own second-best mark in program history. Washington finished seventh with a mark of 7.06 meters, tying for 10
th-best in the record books.
UTRGV was impressive in the preliminary rounds of the sprint races. The women's team claimed eight spots in finals while the men's team punched four tickets to finals.
Sophomore
Symoria Adkins had a massive day, winning her heats and advancing to finals in all three of her events. She started with the women's 60-meter hurdles prelims, cruising to clock in at 8.43 and move on as the No. 1 seed. She tied her own fourth-fastest time in school history with the race.
Adkins shined again in the 60-meter dash, breaking her own program record with a time of 7.44 to advance as the fourth seed. Harris punched her ticket as the No. 5 seed, running 7.46 to tie the second-best performance in school history.
The Vaqueros will have three runners in the women's 200-meter dash final. Senior
Aisha Gay tabbed a program record time of 24.17 and will be the No. 2 seed, followed closely by junior
Zoë Adams in the No. 3 spot after running 24.28, a PR and the second-best race in program history. Adkins capped her day running 24.39, a personal best and the fourth-fastest time in school history, to move on as the sixth seed.
Adams and Gay advanced as the second and third seeds, respectively, to the women's 400-meter dash finals. Adams broke the program record with her PR time of 54.62, and Gay took the No. 3 spot in the record books by running a PR 54.94. They are two of only three runners in school history to break 55-seconds in the event. Sophomore Brownsville Hanna alum
Aliyah Castillo tabbed a personal best 57.82 to finish 15
th.
Freshman
James Voss punched his ticket to finals in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a sixth-place finish in prelims, running 8.13 – the third fastest time in program history.
In the men's 400-meter dash, junior
Jermarrion Stewart secured his spot in the finals with a time of 47.70, winning the second heat and taking the No. 2 spot in program history. Sophomore
Sam Johnson II ran an indoor personal best 48.05 to finish 11
th and claim the No. 4 spot in the UTRGV record books.
Freshman Weslaco East alum
Gael Romo and freshman
Jamari Harts both advanced to the men's 60-meter dash finals with a time of 6.74 – putting them tied for the top spot in the history books with a new program record. Romo won his heat to auto qualify while Harts got in on time. Senior
Jaleel Scott tabbed a PR in the men's race, tying the seventh-fastest time in history of 6.86.
Johnson II and Harts narrowly missed finals in the men's 200-meter dash. Johnson II broke the indoor program record, running 21.39, to finish ninth. Harts followed in 10
th in 21.41, the No. 2 time in school history. Scott ran his second PR in the event.
Junior
Samantha Gonzalez ran a personal best 5:07.04 in the women's mile prelims, taking the No. 8 spot in the program record books. She finished 11
th in the opening round, missing finals by one spot and one second.
Four of UTRGV's five 800-meter runners notched personal bests in Albuquerque. In the men's race, sophomore

th and graduate student Rio Grande City alum
JD Corona followed closely in 14
th, both hitting PRs. Senior Brownsville Porter alum
Jorge Salazar finished 15

Estrella Medellin took 10
th with both lowering their best times.
UTRGV's distance medley relays both finished ninth.
The Vaqueros totaled 24 personal bests and made 20 entries into the program record books.
At the end of Day One, the UTRGV women are sitting in fifth with 19 points with six events scored, and the men are eighth with eight points through five events. Grand Canyon leads the women's standings with 55 points and Southern Utah holds the top spot in the men's team standings with 47.50 points.
