PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team improved by 17 strokes in the second round of the Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Playa Paraíso Golf Club. 
 
A day after posting a first round 313, the Vaqueros posted a second round 296 as they sit tied for fifth with a two-round total of 609. UTRGV is tied with UT Arlington and is just one shot back of Wichita State for fourth place.
 
Freshman McAllen Memorial alum Esteban Gonzalez improved by three strokes with a second round one-over par 73. Gonzalez is tied for eighth place with a two-round total of 149. Junior Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque posted a second round one-over par 73 as he improved by seven strokes from his first round. Duque is tied for 23^rd with a two-round total of 153. 
 
Senior Javier Neira Garcia is tied for 29^th with a two-round total of 154 after improving by two strokes with a second round 76. Redshirt junior Taj Sutherland and freshman Henry Wang are both tied for 39^th with a two-round total of 159. Sutherland posted a second round 80 while Wang posted an 11-shot improvement with a second round two-over par 74. 
 
Freshman Eddie Lai, who is playing as an individual, improved by three strokes with a second round 77. Lai is tied for 35^th with a two-round total of 157. 
 
VCU leads after the second day with a two-round team total of 587 after posting a second round 287. VCU's Tim Chan holds the individual lead with a two-round total of 141 after posting a second round five-under 67. 
 
Play will wrap up on Wednesday with the final round starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
