PAYSON, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team finished tied for second place, marking the program's best finish at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship, on Sunday at The Golf Club at Chaparral Pines Golf Course.
The Vaqueros entered the day five shots behind the lead and posted the tournament's best final round with a team score of two-under 286. The Vaqueros had a share of the clubhouse lead with California Baptist with a three-round total of 877 but Grand Canyon used a final round 289 to with the WAC Championship with a three-round score of 876.
Senior
Javier Neira Garcia led the Vaqueros as he finished in fourth place with a three-round score of 216. Garcia carded a final round one-under par 71 as he finished six strokes back of Seattle U's Kevin Li, who won the WAC Individual Championship.
Freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Esteban Gonzalez finished tied for 14
th with a three-round total of 221 after posting a final round one-over par 73. Junior
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque tied for 19
th with a three-round score 223 as he carded a final round 73.
Freshman
Emilio Gil Leyva finished tied for 31
st with a three-round score of 227 after posting a final round 79. Senior
Leonardo Novella turned in the team's best round with a three-under 69 to finish with a two-round total of 145.
