OREM, Utah – Sophomore
Jedidiah Udunna won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) men's long jump championship Friday as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field program completed Day Two of the WAC Outdoor Championships at Hal Wing Track & Field Stadium in Orem, Utah.
Udunna's top mark of 7.62 meters ranks seventh in program history. This is the first championship of the sophomore's career and third conference medal. He improved from a conference runner-up finish his freshman season. Udunna currently ranks 10
th on the NCAA West performance list and 13
th in the nation in long jump with a season and career-best mark of 7.92 meters.
In the women's long jump, junior
Kailah Gilmore earned a second-place finish with a mark of 5.88 meters, collecting her second WAC silver medal in the event after taking second at indoors. Sophomore
Rayja'nae Pettit followed in seventh with a mark of 5.63 meters. The jumpers added 10 points to UTRGV's women's score.
UTRGV's throwers continued to rack up success as the women's shot put duo of freshman
Omolola Kuponiyi and sophomore
Hannah Hilding finished second and third, respectively. Kuponiyi tabbed a mark of 14.87 meters while Hilding threw 14.77 meters as they combined to add 14 points to the women's team score.
Also scoring for the Vaqueros women was junior
Samantha Gonzalez, who ran 11.01.91 to take fifth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Gonzalez's time ranks fifth in program history.
Sophomore
Symoria Adkins punched two tickets to finals Friday after breaking her own program records in the women's 100-meter hurdles (13.39) and 100-meter dash (11.47). She'll be the No. 1 seed in both events, plus the 200-meter dash, which she qualified for on Thursday. Sophomore
Nayla Harris narrowly missed advancing in the 100-meter dash as she ran the program's No. 9 time in 11.79, finishing 10
th.
Senior Brownsville Porter alum
Estrella Medellin advanced to the women's 800-meter run final after notching a personal-best 2:14.33. Fellow senior Brownsville Porter alum
Jorge Salazar also tabbed a personal best as he finished 16
th in the men's 800-meter run.
Junior
Zoë Adams ran 54.37 in the prelims of the women's 400-meter dash to advance to finals as the No. 3 seed.
UTRGV will have three runners in the men's 400-meter dash final. Sophomore
Sam Johnson II paced the Vaqueros and moved on as the No. 2 seed in 47.02 – the No. 9 time in program history. Senior
Jermarrion Stewart was the fourth-place qualifier in 47.13 and sophomore
Derrius Henry clocked in with a personal-best 47.34 to take the seventh spot.
After two days of competition, UTRGV's women's team is sitting in third with 41 points, behind Utah Valley (82 points) and Grand Canyon (65). The men's team is in seventh with 10 points.
The Vaqueros tallied five more personal bests and six entries into the program record books Friday, bringing the meet total to 10 and 11, respectively.
The meet wraps up Saturday with action starting at 10 a.m. (CT) for UTRGV with the women's discus. The first running final will be the women's 4x100-meter relay at 2:30 p.m. (CT). Fans can watch the running session domestically on ESPN+ or internationally on WAC International.
