RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team is set for their lone exhibition match of the preseason as they host the University of Houston Cougars on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Admission is free for the exhibition match.
After almost two weeks of practices, the Vaqueros are excited to see another opponent on the pitch. The Vaqueros have put in quality practices leading up to the exhibition with the Cougars and have seen growth since their first practice.
"I want to see them relaxed and having fun," UTRGV Head Coach
Mark Foster said. "Of course, I want to see them implement some of the ideas we have been working on early in preseason. In training, things have looked good. The girls have been receptive of what we are trying to do. Really you don't know how much they have taken on board and how much they understand until you put them in the fire. It's a wonderful opportunity and we are really excited for this group to play because they have been working hard the last few weeks."
The matchup against the Cougars will be a tough test for the Vaqueros as they prepare for the season opener on Aug. 15 against Texas Southern. This kind of matchup will allow the Vaqueros to gauge their level of preparedness.
At the end of the day, it's not about the final score but about the progress that is made through this matchup.
The Vaqueros will have five days following the exhibition to get ready for the season opener, which will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
