RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team learned on Tuesday that sophomore
Isabella Burtini, junior
Emilia Compian, and graduate student
Abbie Bailey are this week's Southland Conference (SLC) Players of the Week.
Burtini, Compian, and Bailey helped the Vaqueros to their first two SLC wins of the season defeating Houston Christian and Incarnate Word, who was in first place.
Burtini earned SLC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a pair of goals last week scoring the game-winning goal against the Huskies and the Cardinals. The pair of goals were Burtini's first two goals of the season.
Compian earned SLC Goalkeeper of the week after finishing with seven saves and a pair of shutouts. Compian made four saves against Houston Christian and then followed that with three saves against Incarnate Word to record her third and fourth shutouts of the season.
Bailey earned SLC Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring UTRGV's defensive back line. Bailey helped the Vaqueros in holding opponents to eight shots on goal last week and cleared out multiple other opportunities to secure their two wins. Bailey played the full 90 minutes in both wins and now has played the full 90 minutes in every match this season.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday when they visit McNeese at 7 p.m.
