Track & Field Aims For NCAA West Qualifying Marks at Trinity Last Chance

SAN ANTONIO – Nine outdoor track & field student-athletes representing The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros competed Sunday at the Trinity Last Chance meet in San Antonio hoping to tab a time or mark to qualify for the NCAA West preliminary round of the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Richard Young had a big day, running two personal bests and setting a new outdoor program record in the men's 200-meter dash. Young won the 200 in 20.79 to take the top spot in UTRGV history and was second in the 100-meter dash in 10.37. With his performance in the 200, Young moved up to 35th on the NCAA West qualifying list. The top 48 student-athletes in each individual event are eligible for the first-round meet.

Junior Corin Burns won the men's 100 in 10.31, which is second-best in program history behind only his own personal record. That is his best wind-legal time of the season, but he remains just outside of championship advancement at 49thin the West.

Young and Burns joined sophomore Brownsville Hanna alum Alejandro Arellano and junior Jamari Harts to run the men's 4x100-meter relay. The Vaqueros won the event in 41.00. Harts picked up the victory in the men's 400-meter dash and was followed by Arellano in second. Junior Jalen Nero took fifth in the 200.

In men's field action, sophomore Keamonie Archie won the long jump with a mark of 7.15 meters. Sophomore Hebrew Hunter was fourth in triple jump.

Junior Achol Maywin and senior Zoë Adams were the lone representatives of UTRGV's women's team, and both earned victories. Maywin cleared a personal and program record-tying 1.75 meters to win the high jump and moved up to 50th on the NCAA West performance list but is just short of a qualifying mark. Adams took first in the 400-meter dash.

The small group of Vaqueros totaled three personal bests and four record book entries at the meet. Up next for the Vaqueros is the Southland Conference (SLC) Outdoor Championships in Houston set for May 15-17.
