Swimming & Diving Sets Two Program Records in Day Three of MPSF Championships

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) swimming & diving program completed its third day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Swimming & Diving Championships Friday at City of Pharr-PSJA Natatorium.

The fans once again showed out as over 1,400 fans entered the natatorium for the third consecutive day, including 577 fans during the morning session and 868 fans in the evening session.

In the final race of the day, sophomore Annaleagh Stahl, and freshmen Ava Light, Sarah Bull, and Dia Henderson combined for a new program-record time of 3:55.92 in the 400 medley relay to claim ninth, tied for their highest relay finish in the championships.

Stahl earned a spot in the bonus final with a preliminary time of 4:30.16, good for a 17th place finish in the prelim. Stahl followed up that performance with a 4:30.27 swim in the finals, earning a team-high 19th place for an individual swimmer in the championships.

The 400 medley relay was the first of two program records set on day three as junior Olivia Votava clocked in a time of 58.09 in the 100 butterfly during the time trials.

Looking Back at the Prelims

Stahl just missed the cut for the 100 backstroke as she finished 25th with a time of 57.42. Finishing right behind Stahl, with a personal-best time of 57.89, was freshman Sasapin Sarawas. Freshman Marina Johnson (1:01.03) and sophomore Lauren Uribe (1:06.54) also earned personal-best marks in the event.

Five of the six Vaqueros swimming in the 200 freestyle achieved personal-best or season-best times, including, sophomore Madiana Lofgren (1:59.13), junior AJ Rogers (2:02.11), freshman Giovanna Pierami (2:05.96), and sophomores Audrey Trevino (2:09.74) and Mia Gonzalez (2:15.15). Meanwhile, Henderson earned a team-high 36th place with a time of 1:57.95.

Light shined in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a personal-best and team-high 1:07.64 to finish 28th, just four spots away from the bonus final. Meanwhile, freshman Jaydy Jay took 30th with a time of 1:09.16.

Alongside Stahl's qualifying time in the 400 individual medley, junior Olivia Votava swam a season-best 4:38.65 in the event to finish 29th.

In the 100 butterfly, Bull (59.47) and sophomore Ida Rudelius (1:00.13) finished in 33rd and 35th, respectively.

The Vaqueros will conclude their run at the MPSF Championships Saturday with the preliminary round starting at 10 a.m., the 1650 freestyle beginning at 4:30 p.m., and the finals set to start at 6 p.m. at the City of Pharr-PSJA Natatorium.
