Ortiz gives the Broncs an experienced person in the middle infield, as he has spent three years with the team... Has a career batting average of .321 with a home run and nine runs scored in limited action... With the graduations of the Broncs starting shortstop and second baseman from last season, Ortiz looks to make his mark this season... As strong off the field as on, Ortiz was named to the 1998-99 and 1990-00 UTPA Athletic Director's Honor Rolls.

2000 (Sophomore Season): Played in 14 games, including four starts... hit .333 for the season with his first collegiate home run... Was used regularly as a pinch runner and took advantage, scoring five runs for the Broncs... Smacked his first collegiate home run against Western Illinois (3/7)... Also went a  perfect 2-for-2 in the game, including two runs scored coming off the bench... Made his first start of the season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, going 1-of-4 against the Islanders (3/4)... In the second game of the double-header against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, he made second start of the season and went 1-of-2 with a run scored (3/4)... Made two start in the Broncs series against Dallas Baptist, picking up one hit and was perfect in the field in five opportunities at shortstop (4/14-15).

1999 (Freshman Season): Played in 13 games in his first season, including two starts... Scored four runs and drew one walk... His .308 batting average was the sixth best on the squad.

Edinburg North High School: Playing under Coach Duffy at Edinburg North High School Ortiz hit .320 as the starting shortstop.. He also lettered in Cross Country at ENHS.

Personal: Ortiz is the son of Alberto and Hortencia Ortiz... born on November 1, 1978... Has one brother, Omar, who is a former Bronc and plays in the San Diego Padres farm system... While in high school, Ortiz earned the recognition of Academic All-American and was a member of the National Society... Was a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students... Last year he was recognized as a USAA All-American Scholar Athlete for his work off the field... Ortiz is majoring in Biology.
