HOUSTON, Texas – McAllen-native
Andrew Lopez finished less than one second off the lead to finish in a strong second in the 800-meter run for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs outdoor track & field teams during day two of competition of the 30
th annual Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice University, on Saturday at Holloway Field/Ley Track.
Lopez finished with a time of 1:50.68, 0.95 seconds behind
Chris Bilbrew (Adidas Team Green), to earn the Broncs eight points.
The Broncs men's team also had top-10 performances by Mission-native
Jesus Alvarez (15.72m) and
Joseph Medrano (14.62m) in the shot put,
Joseph Sciaraffa (50.37m) in the javelin throw, Palmview-native
Alejandro Trevino (14.22m) in the triple jump, and Alamo-native
Macario Zarate in both the 110-meter hurdles (14.90s) and 400-meter hurdles (55.63s).
On the women's side,
Sylvia Alboniga took home a top-10 finish by coming in ninth in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Broncs return to action on Thursday during the 85
th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
