Barrera and Davison Stay Hot at CSLA Twilight Open

LOS ANGELES, California – For the second meet in a row, McAllen-native Oscar Barrera and Jasmine Davison made their marks in the top-five in program hammer throw history to pace the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's and women's outdoor track & field teams on Thursday at the Cal State L.A. Twilight Open at Jesse Owens Track and North Field.
 
Barrera made a throw of 54.03 meters, good for third place at the meet and fifth place all-time. Last week, Barrera made the second longest throw in program history with a mark of 57.19 meters at the Trinity Alumni Classic.
 
Davison's throw was measured at 49.15 meters, good for fifth place at the meet and fifth place all-time. Last week, Davison recorded the second longest throw in program history at 51.44 meters to qualify for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
 
On the running side, Alamo-native Macario Zarate had a strong showing in the 110-Meter hurdles with a time of 14.59 seconds, good for third place and just 0.28 seconds off the lead.
 
Sebastian Benavides also had a strong showing, finishing fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.94, 1.5 seconds off the lead.
 
In total, eight out of 11 Broncs who competed earned top 10 finishes, including six top five finishes.
 
The Broncs return to action on Friday at 2:15 p.m. at the Mt. Sac Relays.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
