Broncs Take Home 15 Medals During Final Day of Great West Conference Championships

HUMBLE – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's and women's outdoor track & field teams earned six gold, four silver and five bronze medals on Sunday during the final day of competition at the Great West Conference Championships, hosted by Houston Baptist, at Turner Stadium.
 
Including the first two days of competition, the Broncs' final medal count is seven gold, nine silver and five bronze medals, for a total of 21 medals.
 
The Broncs swept the podium honors in the men's 800-meter run as senior Nikki Rowe alum Andy Lopez won the championship with a time of 1:53.03, junior Martin Casse came in second with a time of 1:53.16 and freshman PSJA Memorial alum Joshua Rosalez placed third with a time of 1:54.47.
 
Casse and Lopez also found themselves on the podium for the men's 1,500-meter run, as Casse earned gold with a time of 4:05.49 and Lopez took silver with a time of 4:06.78.
 
The Broncs swept the gold medals in the 400-meter hurdles, with junior Dijan Johnson winning with a time of 52.40 on the men's side and sophomore Mercedes Med alum Deandra Barroso winning on the women's side with a time of 1:03.77.
 
Sophomore Leocajuan Williams won the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.34 meters.
 
Senior Judith Chumba won the gold medal in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:39.29.
 
Chumba also earned a silver medal in the women's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:43.53. Sophomore Edinburg alum Rebekah Rodriguez won the silver medal in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.31.
 
Junior Mission Veterans alum Alejandro Trevino took the bronze medal in the triple jump with a distance of 13.78 meters, while the women's 4x100 meter-relay team of junior Donna alum Melissa Rodriguez, sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Kari Williams, freshman Brianne Davis and freshman Jasmine Brooks also earned bronze with a time of 48.07.
 
The Broncs earned bronze medals in both 4x400-meter relays as well. On the men's side, the team of Johnson, junior Mission alum Edgar Moreno, freshman Ramon Neilly and senior PSJA Memorial alum Guillermo Martinez finished in a time of 3:20.52. On the women's side, freshman Geneva Anderson, freshman PSJA alum Carolina Hinojosa, Melissa Rodriguez and Brooks finished in a time of 3:54.73.
 
Overall, the women's team came in third with 157.5 points. Utah Valley won its fifth-straight championship with 323 points. The men's team also finished third with 123 points. Utah Valley won its fifth-straight championships with 263 points.
 
Several Broncs are expected to earn bids to the NCAA Championships West Preliminary Round, held May 23-25 in Austin. A complete list of participants will be available at a later date.
