BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team engineered an 18-stroke improvement from the previous day to shoot one of the lowest scores of the second round and move up to 10
th place at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The Vaqueros shot a 7-under 281, better than seven other teams in the field.
Junior
Leonardo Novella and sophomore
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque paced the Vaqueros by going 4-under with 68s. Novella birdied eight holes to go with seven pars. Duque had three birdies and an eagle to go with 13 pars. Novella improved by seven strokes while Duque improved by eight strokes compared to round one.
Redshirt sophomore
Taj Sutherland also saw an eight-stroke improvement, shooting a par 72 that included a pair of birdies and 14 pars.
Freshman
Henry Wang made a five-stroke improvement, shooting a 2-over 74 that included two birdies and 12 pars.
Junior
Javier Neira Garcia, who shot a 68 of his own in the first round, went 1-over with a 73 and leads the Vaqueros with an overall score of 141, which is tied for 15
th out of 61. Novella is just two strokes back at 143, tied for 25
th, while Duque is at 144, tied for 28
th.
Sutherland is tied for 55
th with a 152 while Wang is in 58
th with a 153.
New Mexico State's Garrison Smith leads individuals with a 129.
As a team, the Vaqueros have a score of 579. Grand Canyon and New Mexico State are tied for the team lead with scores of 553.
The Vaqueros close out the WAC Championships on Sunday with the first group teeing off at 9 a.m.
