NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team learned on Thursday that
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque,
Javier Neira Garcia, and
Taj Sutherland have been named 2023-24 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars.
In order to be named a Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically, competed 50 percent of the team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain minimum cumulative career grade point average of 3.2 while also being of high moral character and be in good standing with their school.
Garcia played in all 11 tournaments and led the Vaqueros with a 72.0 stroke average and posted four top-10 finishes, including a win at The Big Texan and a fourth place finish at the WAC Championship, which earned him All-WAC First Team honors. Garcia carded 17 rounds of even par or better, including an 8-under 64 at The Big Texan that tied the program record for lowest individual single round.
Duque played in 10 tournaments last year while posting at 73.3 stroke average and posted four top-20 finishes. Sutherland played in eight tournaments and posted a 74.7 stroke average with a pair of top-10 finishes.
Garcia, Duque, and Sutherland also earned Academic All-WAC honors and were named to the Fall and Spring AD Honor Roll.
There were 532 Division I athletes from 180 schools that earned 2023-24 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar honors.
