Kailey Salazar and junior
Jamari Harts both set program records to headline The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's (UTRGV) final day at the Charles Austin Classic Saturday at the Texas State Track & Field Complex.
Salazar took second in the women's 800-meter run in a program-record time of 2:09.41. She was followed closely by junior
Lilliana Guerrero in third in 2:09.87, which goes down as the No. 3 time in program history. Freshman Santa Maria alum
Mia Picazo and senior
Samantha Gonzalez took sixth and eighth, respectively, to round out an impressive group in the event.
Harts finished second in the men's 200-meter dash in 20.95 to take the No. 1 spot in the record books. Harts also picked up a win in the 400-meter dash in 46.81, which ties the sixth-fastest race in program history. Sophomore Brownsville Hanna alum
Alejandro Arellano finished right behind Harts in both events. Arellano took second in the 400 and fourth in the 200, running personal bests in both races. He ran the fourth-fastest time in program history in the 200, clocking in at 21.17.
Junior
Cerrone Thompson was third in the men's 400 to cap a 1-2-3 finish for UTRGV in the event. The Vaqueros also swept the women's 400-meter dash, led by senior
Zoe Adams taking first in 55.10. She was followed by senior
Trinity Kirk in second and junior Brownsville Hanna alum
Aliyah Castillo in third.
The Vaqueros tallied four event wins Saturday in San Marcos. A pair of freshmen in
Krystan Bright and
Richard Young captured victories in their first collegiate outdoor meets. Bright ran 13.90 to win the women's 100-meter hurdles and Young took first in the men's 100-meter dash in 10.52, which ties the seventh-fastest time in program history.
UTRGV had a good day in field events, collecting five second-place finishes. Junior
Hannah Hilding took second in the women's discus with a mark of 48.88 meters and senior
Efe Latham was second in the women's shot put after throwing 13.51 meters. Junior
Achol Maywin was second in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.72 meters, which is third-best in program history.
Junior
Aaron Cooper and sophomore
La'Zariah Bethany headlined UTRGV's triple jumpers with second-place finishes. Cooper marked the second-best jump in men's outdoor program history of 15.48 meters. Bethany tabbed a personal best in the women's event with a jump of 12.23 meters. Junior
Tolu Odetola followed Bethany in third.
Junior
Jaylen Critton ran the third-fastest time in program history in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing second in 14.30. He was also second in the 400-meter hurdles. Bright took third in the women's 400 hurdles.
Freshman
Jizzale Davis had a solid collegiate outdoor debut with a pair of second-place finishes to lead UTRGV's women sprinters. She ran 11.70 in the 100-meter dash, tabbing the seventh-best race in program history. Junior
Nayla Harris took third in the event. Davis also entered the record books in the 200-meter dash, running 23.73 to tie the sixth-fastest race. She was followed by Adams in fourth, Kirk in fifth and Castillo in sixth. Kirk and Castillo ran personal bests in the event.
Freshman PSJA Memorial alum
Diego Pina led UTRGV's men's 800-meter runners with a second-place finish in 1:56.17. Junior
Abraham Morales followed in third.
The Vaqueros totaled nine personal bests Saturday and made 11 entries into the program record books. UTRGV will return to San Marcos March 27-29 for the Bobcat Invitational.
