Track & Field Heads to Texas A&M For Final Non-Conference Meet

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field teams will be competing at Texas A&M's Alumni Muster Saturday at E.B. Cushing Stadium in the final tune-up meet before the Southland Conference (SLC) Outdoor Championships.

The action begins at 9 a.m. with the women's and men's 5,000-meter races, then the remaining track events will run beginning at 2:15 p.m. Field events will get underway at 10 a.m. Competing teams include the hosting Aggies, Baylor, Missouri, Louisville, UTSA, North Texas, Rice and Sam Houston. The Vaqueros will also get a look at SLC opponents Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, McNeese, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday ahead of the championship meet scheduled for May 15-17.

The hosting Aggies are ranked No. 2 in the nation on the men's side and No. 3 on the women's side. The Baylor women are No. 6 in the nation while the Louisville women head into the meet ranked 14th. On the men's side, Baylor is 26th and Louisville sits at No. 39.

The stout competition is exactly what the Vaqueros need before hitting the final stretch of the season. Currently, UTRGV has three student-athletes leading individual events in the SLC – juniors Corin Burns andNayla Harris in the men's and women's 100-meter dash, respectively, and senior Samantha Gonzalez in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Additionally, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of Krystan Bright, Jizzale Davis, Aliyah Castillo and Harris is No. 1 in the conference.

Three Vaqueros are in NCAA West qualifying positions in their respective events with just under four weeks until the championship rounds begin. Harris is 29th in the West in the women's 100, holding strong to a postseason position. Junior Aaron Cooper opened his season with a big mark that currently has him sitting 21st in the men's triple jump. Junior Hannah Hilding put herself in postseason contention last weekend with a season-best mark of 57.18 in the women's hammer throw, moving to 45th in the West.

Saturday's meet will also give the Vaqueros a chance to compete at the host site for the NCAA West first round. This meet and the conference championships will be the last opportunities for the Vaqueros to secure their spots in the postseason and a return trip to College Station. The pressure is on as the season heats up and UTRGV is ready to respond.
