FULL RESULTS
HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American track and field team had a strong showing this weekend at the Howie Ryan All-Comers meet at Bill Yeomen Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston. Andrew Lopez had the strongest showing finishing first in the mile run with a time of 4:17.31.
Lopez beat out 37 other runners for the first place time. Wally Gonzales finished 25th with a time of 4:36.06 and
Hansel Ibarra crossed the finish line 31st with a time of 4:44.95.
In the men's 3000 meter run
Omar Doria finished fifth with a time of 8:44.87.
Mathew Kotut finished just behind him in sixth with a time of 8:45.99.
Luis Serrano (14th, 8:55.83)
Ricardo Reynoso (31st, 9:28.81) and
Adrian Sepulveda (9:44.63) also ran in the race for the Broncs.
In the field events,
Oscar Barrera had the strongest showing by finishing second in the weight throw competition with a distance of 16.13m. He finished behind Sam Houston's Jason Russell who threw the weight a distance of 17.08m. Chris Tamez finished with a distance of 12.48m.
"We are extremely pleased with today's performance and it was definitely an improvement from last week." UTPA track and field head coach Dave Hartman said. "Andy's victory in the mile was the highlight of the meet, but Oscar's runner-up finish in the weight throw was impressive."
On the women's side,
Lilian Lagat finished 11th in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:44.08. Julia Sambu of Texas A&M-Corups Christi won with a time of 10:12.44.
Hilda Galloso (20th, 11:02.99)
Beatriz Garza (24th,11:14.05) and
Brittney Garza (11:37.61) also ran the 3000 m for UTPA.
Next up for the Broncs, the compete in the Tyson Invitational on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The meet begins on Friday February 11th.
