KINGSVILLE, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their second meet of the outdoor season on Saturday, competing in the 2011 Cactus Cup at Javalina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The men's team finished in fourth place out of six competing schools. The women's squad, who had several runners finish at the top of their races, finished in third.

The women's squad was highlighted by the results of their runners in the 4X400m relay. The Broncs won the race with a time of 4:02.80, nearly three seconds better than runner-up Angelo State. The relay team consisted of Destiny Schulze, Alexia Frank, Samantha Villareal, and Shayna Parker.

Parker and Schulze were both winners competing as individuals on Saturday. Schulze won the 400m dash with a time of 59.56, outlasting TAMUK runner Brittany Stafford (59.74). Frank finished the race in third for UTPA with a time of 1:00.01. Villareal (7th, 1:01.48) and Sara Hernandez (9th, 1:02.98) also ran the 400m for the Broncs.

Parker was the winner in the women's 800m run with a time of 2:23.78. She finished in front of fellow Bronc runner Lilian Lagat who crossed the line with a runner-up time of 2:26.10. Briana Villareal of TAMUK was third with a time of 2:28.10. Daphne Payton (5th, 2:28.49), Brittney Garza (6th, 2:31.34), Robin Galloso (8th, 2:32.04), Jessica Johnstone (9th, 2:32.82) and Diana Galloso (15th, 2:44.35) also ran for the Broncs.

"Today was another progressive step for both the men's and women's track teams, UTPA Assistant Track and Field Coach Xavier Richardson said. "Despite windy conditions, they competed hard and we had numerous top-three places on both sides. Highlighted by the Cactus Cup champions Abby Garza in her first javelin competition of the season, Destiny Schulze leading the 400m Dash from wire to wire, Shayna Parker leading a 1-2 finish in the 800, and once again capped off by a victory by the women's 4x400 relay."

On the men's side Luis Serrano took first in the 1500m run with a time of 4:07.71, just a hair in front of runner up Zach Brush from Trinity (4:07.77). UTPA's Mathew Kotut finished in fifth with a time of 4:13.61. Wally Gonzalez (10th, 4:19.11), and Hansel Ibarra (13th, 4:31.23) also ran the 1500m for UTPA. Omar Doria finished in second place in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.53 just behind Patrick Kimeli of Texas A&M Corpus Christi who won with a time of 1:56.47.

Today was definitely about each athlete showing up and competing hard despite conditions. The clock may not tell the tale, but that we placed well across the disciplines does. We look forward to Rice next week as further evidence of our collective gains.
