BRONC WOMEN TAKE FIVE TOP FINISHES AT BORDER OLYMPICS

MEET RESULTS

LAREDO, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) track and field took home six top finishes, including five on the women's side at the Border Olympics track and field competition in Laredo Saturday afternoon. This was the first meet for the Broncs of the outdoor season after wrapping up the indoor portion of the schedule this past Monday at the Great West Conference tournament in New York City. There were four competing schools at Sunday's meeting including Texas A&M Corpus Christi and two schools from the other side of the border. (Monterrey Tech, and Universidad Autonoma Nuevo Leon)

“We had a good day at the Border Olympics after finishing the Indoor season earlier this week in New York City with the GWC tournament,” UTPA assistant coach Juan Cardenas said. “We are looking forward to a great outdoor season, and with one meet under our belt we look to be on our way.”

Jasmine Webb took the title in the 100m dash, clocking in with a time of 12.21s just ahead of runner up Violeta Avila-Torres of UANL who clocked in at 12.24s. Sara Hernandez finished in seventh at 12.83, with Cindy Velasquez (12.96) and Abby Garza (13.80) behind her.

Melinda Sarmiento, who came-off a runner-up finish at the GWC championships, took the high jump title as she cleared the bar at 1.65m. Alana Duval finished in second as she cleared 1.58m. Abby Garza finished fourth with a jump of 1.48m and Cindy Velasquez jumping the bar at 1.37m.

Brittany Talamentez took the shot-put crown with a throw of 11.1m. UTPA was the only competing school in that event as Vivian Espinoza (10.9m) and Erika Anderson (10.2m) finished in second and third respectively.

The Bronc women also swept the top three spots in the discus, with Anderson, out-dueling Talamentez with a throw of 35.34m Talamentez hit a distance of 30.59m to finish in second, while Espinoza finished third (30.44m)

UTPA also took home the top spots in both the men's and women's 4X400m relay.

The Broncs next meet with be on March 16-17 at Rice University at the Shirley Crow Multi-events meet.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
