Broncs Win Five Events at Great West Conference Outdoor Championships

HUMBLE, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's and women's outdoor track and field teams won five individual championships during the final day of the Great West Conference Outdoor Championships, hosted by Houston Baptist University, at Turner Stadium.
 
Palmview-native Alejandro Trevino won the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.40 meters, 0.92 meters farther than his closest competitor. It was also the second longest triple jump in program history.
 
Alamo-native Macario Zarate won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.60, the second fastest time in program history.
 
Martin Casse won the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:52.51.
 
Sylvia Alboniga won the women's 100-meter hurdles by breaking the program record for the second day in a row with a time of 14.22.
 
“It feels great to win first,” Alboniga said. “I've been trying all season to reach a personal best and I'm so glad that I accomplished that.”
 
Alboniga also won the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.08, the fastest time in Great West Conference history and second fastest time in program history.
 
Jasmine Webb came close to winning the women's 100-meter dash, falling 0.006 seconds short of Houston Baptist's Brittane Gaines. Webb's time of 11.619 seconds is a new program record. Webb and Deon Marquis held the previous record of 11.81 seconds, set last year and in 2006 respectively.
 
As a team, the women's team finished in fourth while the men's team finished in sixth.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
