Brandon Sanders won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships in the discus and 400-meter dash, respectively, and the team of senior
Dimitris Levantinos, freshman Brownsville Veterans Memorial alum
Max Carmona, freshman
Mariano Hernandez and Sanders won the 4x400-meter relay title to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field teams during the final day of the WAC Championships on Saturday at Hal Wing Track.
In total, UTRGV finished with five WAC Championships, including titles by junior
Idatonye Cheetham-West and freshman
Samariae Bonds in the long jump and shot put, respectively, on Friday.
Thomas recorded the seventh-best discus in program history with a throw of 48.88 meters. UTRGV earned 13 points in the event as freshman Weslaco alum
Ciera Gonzalez finished seventh with a throw of 41.26 meters and freshman
Taylar Kregness placed eighth with a throw of 41.18 meters.
Sanders won the 400-meter dash for the second day in a row, this time with a time of 47.22 seconds. Hernandez placed sixth with a time of 48.42 seconds.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team closed out the competition with the fourth-best time in program history, clocking in at 3:12.33.
Levantinos had two other big performances, finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.47 seconds, the second-fastest in program history, and third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.70 seconds, the fourth-best in program history.

Natalie Garza and junior
Ashley Hughes took silver with a program record time of 3:44.67.
Hughes also broke the program record in the 400-meter dash with a second-place time of 53.44 seconds, one hundredth of a second off the lead. Rutherford posted the seventh-best time in program history with a seventh-place time of 56.27 seconds. Hughes later finished eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.41 seconds.
Senior
Dai'ja Colemanrecorded the best triple jump of her career and second-best in program history with a second-place mark of 12.58 meters, tied for the 38
th-best in the west region entering Saturday's action.
Coleman also combined with Cheetham-West, freshman
Zarrey Sams and junior
Keely Satterfield for the second-fastest 4x100-meter relay in program history at 47.02 seconds. Cheetham-West later finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.09 seconds.
UTRGV had two other second-place finishes, including freshman
Dorcas Koech in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:02.86 and senior
Felicia Wills in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.36.
For her efforts, Koech was named WAC Women's Freshman Outstanding Athlete.
Both the men's and women's teams finished fourth.
UTRGV student-athletes with marks that rank in the top 48 in the west region this season will advance to the NCAA Championships West Preliminary Round May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
