LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros indoor track & field teams broke three program records as they wrapped up the Jarvis Scott Invite Saturday at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock.
The distance crew had a big day on the track. Freshman Santa Maria alum
Mia Picazo claimed the first program record of the day as she finished sixth in the women's 1,000-meter run in 3:02.13. It was her first time running the event as a collegiate student-athlete. Shortly after, senior
Samantha Gonzalez set a new program record in the women's mile with a personal best performance as she finished fourth in 4:54.35. Senior Brownsville Porter alum
Estrella Medellin also ran a personal best in the women's mile. Gonzalez later finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run.
UTRGV's men's 4x400-meter relay team capped the weekend with a program record in a ninth-place finish. Junior

The sprinters carried the momentum from Friday's races to Saturday and stacked up personal best performances. In the men's 200-meter dash B heats, the Vaqueros earned three top-10 finishes as Johnson led the way in sixth in 21.52, which is the fifth-best time in program history. Arellano finished right behind in seventh in 21.53, a personal best and tied for fifth-best performance in program history. Freshman
Richard Young, who etched his name in history in the 100-meter dash Friday, took the No. 8 spot in the 200 with a personal best time of 21.60 as he finished ninth. Junior
Jaylen Critton also tabbed a PB in the event.

UTRGV had two student-athletes compete in the top-10 heats of the 200-meter dash. Senior

th in the men's race, running 21.31 which is a personal best and the second fastest race in program history.
UTRGV got two personal bests in the 600-yard events. In the women's race, sophomore
Kailey Salazar earned a seventh-place finish while freshman
Azayla Smith tabbed a PB as she finished 15

Diego Pina ran a PB as he finished 24
th in the men's race.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Castillo, Davis, Bright and Adams tabbed the sixth-best performance in program history as they clocked in at 3:51.45, which is a season-best for the Vaqueros.
UTRGV had a personal record or record book entry in every field event it competed in Saturday. Junior
Aaron Cooper was seventh in the men's triple jump with a PB mark of 14.98 meters, which is fourth best in program history. Senior
Efe Latham took fifth in the women's shot put B with a massive personal best mark of 14.38 meters. Junior
Hannah Hilding also made the event's final and finished ninth.
Sophomore
La'Zariah Bethany notched a personal best 11.97 meters in the women's triple jump to finish 14
th. In the women's high jump, junior
Achol Maywin cleared 1.70 meters, tying the second-best mark in program history. Freshman
Zaire Cunningham notched a personal best as he cleared 1.98 meters in the men's high jump.
The Vaqueros collected 15 personal bests on Saturday and totaled 33 during the meet. UTRGV also made 10 entries into the record books.
Up next for the Vaqueros is the Southland Conference Indoor Championship scheduled for March 2-3 in Birmingham, Alabama.
